Members Exhibition
Featuring works by various KALICO members.
November 2021 - January 2022
There are words that can take on other meanings, they become heavy when associated with a hard memory, they become joyful when a happy memory accompanies it. Community is a word that at its best finds us together working and living in communion with our neighbors in a utopia of convivial connection and benevolence. At its worst leaves us wondering if we belong encombered by examining our existence and the connection we yearn for. The beautiful truth is that community is what we make it, we decide what it looks like and where we pursue it. At KALICO we believe that community and art exist in compliment to each other; each as tools to bring us closer. We are better together.
We asked our members to illustrate what community means to them in our very first KALICO Member’s Exhibition. The response varies from bright and whimsical to heavy and profound. We hope you enjoy the collection and examine what community means to you.
RAW
Featuring raw clay vessels by ceramacist Stephanie Sequin.
August 2021 - October 2021
Spring-boarding from previously explored forms, processes, and materials RAW showcases a collection of curated wall vignettes. Each vignette consists of a collection of vessels and materials that have been paired with thoughtful intent. Clay vessels, acrylic paint, graphite, and charcoal drawings are arranged to create intriguing and aesthetically pleasing arrangements. The various materials and designs allow for subtle investigations between materials, form, and composition.
RAW focuses’ on compositional aspects and material relationships previously explored in Stephanie’s work in a more nuanced and restrained manner. Using a minimal color palette and a cohesive display method, RAW aims to create a fresh and sophisticated body of work that avoids distractions and allows viewers the opportunity for contemplation. ‘Noticing what we notice’ is more challenging than the uncomplicated phrase sounds, but doing so can add great value to how we move through and see our daily interactions.
Origin Stories
Featuring multi-media work by Monica Gilles-BringsYellow
February 6, 2021 - April 30, 2021
?e’ pesya? (Hello, everyone!)
We all have stories about where we come from and how we came to be what we are today. Storytelling and the telling of creation stories, in particular, have ancient traditions in Native American societies.
Origin Stories continues that tradition by presenting a platform to discuss the effects historical events have had on Native people. This exhibition brings to light histories that are often unknown, concealed, or disregarded by broader American society.
Origin Stories showcases how Native American resilience and influence have impacted the culture we live in today.
Downtown Stories
November 1, 2020 - January 29, 2021
A collaboration between 10 different Kalispell businesses and local artists who were paired together and worked to create temporary art installations that could be experienced at each participating business location.
At KALICO Art Center, we know how art can bring people together, challenge the status quo, and be a powerful catalyst for new ideas. Objects in an art exhibition are archival in nature as they outline an artist’s, or group of artists’, perception of the world at a certain point in time. That is why every exhibition at KALICO is meticulously planned with purpose and intent.
Arts and creativity is fundamental for self-understanding and helps connect us to each other and the world. For this reason, we are committed to keeping exhibitions free and open to the public.
